Puruṣottama Yoga · Verse 4
ततः पदं तत्परिमार्गितव्यं यस्मिन्गता न निवर्तन्ति भूयः | तमेव चाद्यं पुरुषं प्रपद्ये यतः प्रवृत्तिः प्रसृता पुराणी
tataḥ padaṃ tat parimārgitavyaṃ yasmin gatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ | tam eva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī
Then that place must be sought, going to which one does not return again. To Him, the primordial Puruṣa, I surrender, from whom this ancient manifestation sprouted.
After cutting the tree, the pada is sought — the place, the supreme abode. It is a one-way journey (a-saṃsāra), without return. This contrasts with the cycle of saṃsāra where one always comes back.
The final destination is ādya puruṣa — the primordial Puruṣa, the original Being. Kṛṣṇa identifies with this primordial principle. From Him sprouted (prasṛta) anciently (purāṇī) this pravṛtti — the manifestation, the cosmic activity. This is the source, and Kṛṣṇa surrenders completely (prapadye) to that principle.
