yāta-yāmaṃ gata-rasaṃ pūti paryuṣitaṃ ca yat | ucchiṣṭam api cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasa-priyam

Food that is old, tasteless, putrid, stale, and also leftovers from others, and moreover impure, is appreciated by the tāmasika.

Tāmasika foods: yāta-yāma — cooked three hours ago (old), stale. Gata-rasa — tasteless, insipid. Pūti — putrid, foul-smelling. Paryuṣita — stale, fermented.

Ucchiṣṭa — leftovers from others, food left behind. Amedhya — impure, unclean. This type of food increases darkness, inertia, insensibility.
