Mokṣa-Sannyāsa Yoga · Verse 7

नियतस्य तु संन्यासः कर्मणो नोपपद्यते | मोहात्तस्य परित्यागस्तामसः परिकीर्तितः

niyatasya tu saṃnyāsaḥ karmaṇo nopapadyate | mohāt tasya parityāgas tāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

The renunciation of prescribed action is not appropriate; the abandonment of it through ignorance is said to be tāmasika.

Tāmasika abandonment: niyatasya karmaṇaḥ — of prescribed action (nitya-karma), obligatory duties. The renunciation (saṃnyāsa) of this na upapadyate — is not appropriate.

Mohāt — through ignorance, delusion. Parityāgaḥ — abandonment. It is tāmasaḥ — dark, product of tamas. Abandoning duties through laziness, confusion or false renunciation is harmful, not liberating.
