Śivasaṃhitā 4.102

This verse opens a conditional clause completed in subsequent verses, establishing two non-negotiable prerequisites: transmission from the guru (gurūpadiṣṭa) and unbroken daily practice (pratyahaṃ). Knowledge of the technique alone is insufficient; it must be enacted continuously through a legitimate lineage.

The compound gurūpadiṣṭamārgeṇa joins guru (the ‘weighty’ or ‘heavy’ one), upadiṣṭa (pointed out, instructed), and mārga (path). The instrumental case signals that the guru’s path is the very instrument of practice. Samācaret, from ā-car with sam-, implies a thorough, orderly, and sustained execution rather than sporadic effort.

Within haṭha and tāntric traditions, guru-disciple transmission (dīkṣā) is initiatory rather than merely instructional. Without it, the mudrās and kuṇḍalinī practices of this chapter are regarded as potentially ineffective or hazardous. The text insists that the correct map can only be received from one who has already traversed the territory.
