Daśama-prakaraṇam (Karma-yoga) · Verse 14
नाहं स्त्री न पुमान्नैव नापुंसकं कदाचन । केवलं चित्स्वरूपोऽहं सच्चिदानन्दलक्षणम् ॥
nāhaṃ strī na pumānnaiva nāpuṃsakaṃ kadācana | kevalaṃ citsvarūpo'haṃ saccidānandalakṣaṇam ||
This verse, a profound articulation of the ātman, draws directly from the core tenets found within the Upaniṣads, echoing the fundamental assertion that the individual self transcends the limitations of grammatical gender – stri (woman), puman (man), and napumsaka (neuter) – representing merely temporary and conditioned manifestations. The lakshana, or characteristic, attributed to the self is not simply existence (sat) but is inextricably linked to consciousness (cit) and the experience of pure bliss (ānanda). This description mirrors the Brahman revealed through meditative experience, where the distinctions of the phenomenal world dissolve. The phrasing “only of consciousness nature” suggests a fundamental reality that precedes and underlies all conceptual categories, a state of being where the qualities of existence, awareness, and bliss are not merely attributes but the very essence of what is. It anticipates later developments in both Rāja Yoga, particularly in the understanding of samādhi, and the broader tradition of non-dual thought, aligning with the ultimate goal of realizing the unified nature of the self and the cosmos.
