Ṣaṣṭha-prakaraṇam (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 10

गार्ग्युवाच - भगवन्धारणास्वस्य या गतिर्मे वद प्रभो । केन रूपेण संसिद्धिर्भवेत् त्वं वद मे प्रभो ॥

gārgyuvāca - bhagavandhāraṇāsyasya yā gatirme vada prabho | kena rūpeṇa saṃsiddhirbhavet tvaṃ vada me prabho ||

The dialogue presented in this verse, delivered by Gārgī, reveals a profound yearning for experiential understanding within the Yājñavalkya system. Gārgī’s repeated invocations of “Oh Lord” – “prabhu” – demonstrates a seeking spirit, a desire to move beyond mere intellectual comprehension and towards a direct realization of samshiddhi, or ‘perfection’ – a term that suggests not simply achievement, but the complete integration of the self into a higher state of being. Gārgī’s questions— “What is the course of this dhāraṇā? By what form is perfection attained?”— highlight the need for a clear method, a tangible path to navigate the complexities of the yogic process. The Lord’s response implicitly acknowledges the difficulty of articulating the ultimate truth, suggesting that samshiddhi is not a formula to be grasped, but a state to be realized through sustained dhāraṇā, demanding a dedicated and disciplined approach. This exchange emphasizes the role of the guru and the importance of seeking guidance in the journey toward samādhi.
