Daivāsura-Sampad-Vibhāga Yoga · Verse 17
आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः | यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्
ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ | yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam
Self-conceited, arrogant, full of the intoxication of pride in wealth, they sacrifice nominally with sacrifices, with hypocrisy, without following the rules.
The asura even in “religious” practice. Ātma-sambhāvitāḥ — self-glorified, with inflated self-concept. Stabdha — arrogant, rigid. Dhana-māna-mada — intoxication of pride in wealth.
Their sacrifice: nāma-yajña — sacrifices only of name, formal, without essence. Done dambhena — with hypocrisy, for show. Avidhi-pūrvakam — without preceding the rules, outside dharma. Empty ritualism, facade religiosity.
