सत्कारमानपूजार्थं तपो दम्भेन चैव यत् | क्रियते तदिह प्रोक्तं राजसं चलमध्रुवम्
satkāra-māna-pūjārthaṃ tapo dambhena caiva yat | kriyate tad iha proktaṃ rājasaṃ calam adhruvam
The austerity that is practiced with hypocrisy, for the sake of honor, respect and adoration — that is said here as rājasika, unstable and transient.
Rājasika tapas: impure motivation. Satkāra — gestures of respect. Māna — honor. Pūjā — worship/admiration from others. The purpose (artha) is reputation, not transformation.
Dambhena — with hypocrisy, showing more than one is. Result: calam — unstable, agitated. Adhruvam — non-lasting, transient. When external attention ceases, the “tapas” ceases.
