Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 70
प्राणायामं ततः कुर्याद्यावदिच्छति तत्त्ववित् | ततो युञ्जीत धारणां धारणायां धियं ततः ||
prāṇāyāmaṃ tataḥ kuryād yāvad icchati tattvavit | tato yuñjīta dhāraṇāṃ dhāraṇāyāṃ dhiyaṃ tataḥ ||
The complete map of yoga according to Gheraṇḍa. After āsana and mudrā comes prāṇāyāma — control of the breath. Then dhāraṇā — concentration. Finally, the mind (dhī) is established in the practice.
The “knower of truth” (tattva-vid) practices as much as necessary, no more. Moderation is wisdom; excess even in yoga can be harmful.
This is the classical haṭha yoga sequence: ṣaṭkarma → āsana → mudrā → prāṇāyāma → pratyāhāra → dhyāna → samādhi. Each step leads to the next.
