Śivasaṃhitā 5.158

This verse presents the shadow side of the liberation described in the preceding passages: without the liberating knowledge that stills the mind’s modifications, beings continue to revolve ceaselessly in the wheel of saṃsāra. The verb bhramante—they wander, they roam—carries connotations of confusion and aimlessness, suggesting that ordinary life is not merely limited but fundamentally disoriented, movement without genuine direction.

The compound saṃsāracakra is philosophically precise. Saṃsāra derives from the root sṛ with the prefix sam-, denoting continuous flowing or wandering; it is the perpetual movement of unliberated consciousness through successive states of existence. Cakra adds the crucial dimension of circularity: this is not a journey with a destination but a wheel turning on itself. Rhetorically, this verse serves as a counterweight to the promises of siddhi and liberation found throughout Chapter Five.
