Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 16
नानन्तरं काल एको न च विद्यते नापि चिन्तयेत्
nānantaraṃ kāla eko na ca vidyate nāpi cintayet
There is no time beyond, nor does it exist; there is no reason to worry
Time is one of the primary forms that mind projects onto consciousness. Vasiṣṭha treats it as a convention, not a reality: the past is memory, the future is anticipation, both are present movements of the mind. The “now” is not a point in time; it is the only time that exists, and it is the only place where consciousness can recognize itself. Worrying about what will come is as reasonable as worrying about what will happen in a dream that has not yet been dreamt.
