Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 17

एकम् एव द्वितीयं च नास्ति सत्यं महोदय

ekam eva dvitīyaṃ ca nāsti satyaṃ mahodaya

Only the One exists; there is no second — this is the supreme truth

The sharpest formulation of Advaita: ekam eva dvitīyam — “one alone, without a second.” Not “one and zero” — that would be negation. But “one without a second” — that is fullness without fragmentation. The difference is crucial: Advaita does not say the world does not exist; it says the world does not exist as something separate from consciousness. The wave is not negated by the ocean; it is recognized as ocean in motion.
