अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् | स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते
anudvega-karaṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priya-hitaṃ ca yat | svādhyāyābhyasanaṃ caiva vāṅmayaṃ tapa ucyate
Speech that causes no agitation, true, pleasant and beneficial, and also the study of Scriptures — that is said to be the austerity of speech.
Tapas of speech (vāṅmaya). Vākya — spoken word, with four qualities: anudvega-karam — not causing agitation; satya — true; priya — pleasant; hita — beneficial.
Svādhyāya-abhyasanam — study (abhyasana) of the personal study of sacred texts (svādhyāya). Disciplined speech — truthful, benevolent, useful — is austerity of the organ of expression.
