दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे | देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम्
dātavyam iti yad dānaṃ dīyate 'nupakāriṇe | deśe kāle ca pātre ca tad dānaṃ sāttvikaṃ smṛtam
The charity that is given thinking ‘should be given’, to one who has done no favor, in the appropriate place, at the appropriate time, and to the appropriate recipient — that charity is remembered as sāttvika.
Sāttvika charity: attitude (dātavyam iti — should be given, as duty), recipient (anupakāriṇe — to one who has done no prior favor, without expectation of return).
Three conditions: deśe (appropriate place), kāle (appropriate time), pātre (worthy/appropriate recipient). The pātra is not just anyone but one who can use the gift for spiritual growth. It is dāna without attachment, without ego.
