Ṣaṣṭha-prakaraṇam (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 15
वायौ गतिश्च विज्ञेयमाकाशे शून्यतां व्रजेत् । एवं पञ्चसु धारणासु युक्तः स्यात् योगवित्तमः ॥
vāyau gatiśca vijñeyamākāśe śūnyatāṃ vrajet | evaṃ pañcasu dhāraṇāsu yuktaḥ syāt yogavittamaḥ ||
This verse employs a striking analogy, drawing upon the principles of vayu, the dynamic wind, and shunyata, the emptiness of space, to illuminate the core of dhāraṇā. The movement observed in vayu represents the focused application of attention, a directed flow of energy, while the attainment of shunyata signifies the complete dissolution of mental activity and the establishment of a clear, undisturbed awareness. By uniting these two principles – the active movement of intention with the passive acceptance of stillness – the practitioner embodies the five distinct dhāraṇās described. This union, achieved through disciplined practice, elevates the yogavid – the ‘excellent knower of yoga’ – to a state of profound understanding, signifying mastery of the foundational techniques required for progressing along the yogic path. The verse’s emphasis on integration highlights that true yogic advancement isn’t simply about individual practices, but about the harmonious coordination of opposing forces within the subtle body.
