Chapter 16 · Verse 9
हातुमिच्छति संसारं रागी दुःखजिहासया
hātumicchati saṃsāraṃ rāgī duḥkhajihāsayā | vītarāgo hi nirduḥkhastasminnapi na
This verse in chapter 16 exposes a subtle trap. The attached person wishes to abandon saṃsāra in order to escape duḥkha; the detached one, already free from suffering, does not even desire liberation. The wish to escape is still a wish, and every wish presupposes the duality from which suffering springs. True detachment is not the desire for a better state, but the absence of any need for a different state. The one who is free does not seek freedom.
