रजसि प्रलयं गत्वा कर्मसङ्गिषु जायते | तथा प्रलीनस्तमसि मूढयोनिषु जायते
rajasi pralayaṃ gatvā karma-saṅgiṣu jāyate | tathā pralīnas tamasi mūḍha-yoniṣu jāyate
Dying when activity is predominant, one is born among those attached to action; and dying when submerged in inertia, one is born in deluded wombs.
Death in rajas leads to rebirth among karma-saṅgiṣu — those attached to action. This includes ambitious, worldly people caught in the cycle of desire and fulfillment.
Death in tamas leads to mūḍha-yoniṣu — deluded wombs. This includes births as animals, plants, or humans with severe limitations (severe ignorance, disability, or adverse conditions).
The guṇa dominant at death shapes the next birth. This is why spiritual traditions emphasize maintaining awareness and sattva at the time of death.
