Mokṣa-Sannyāsa Yoga · Verse 35
यया स्वप्नं भयं शोकं विषादं मदमेव च | न विमुञ्चति दुर्मेधा धृतिः सा पार्थ तामसी
yayā svapnaṃ bhayaṃ śokaṃ viṣādaṃ madam eva ca | na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī
The constancy by which one does not abandon sleep, fear, sorrow, depression and pride — that constancy is tāmasic, oh Pārtha.
Tāmasic constancy: clings to the negative. Svapna — sleep, dullness, fantasy. Bhaya — fear. Śoka — sorrow. Viṣāda — depression. Mada — pride, intoxication.
Durmedhā — of poor intelligence. Cannot let go of these states, identifies with them. It is obstinacy in darkness.
