Ātma-Saṃyama Yoga · Verse 46

तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोऽधिकः | कर्मिभ्यश्चाधिको योगी तस्माद्योगी भवार्जुन

tapasvibhyo 'dhiko yogī jñānibhyo 'pi mato 'dhikaḥ | karmibhyaś cādhiko yogī tasmād yogī bhavārjuna

The yogi is superior to the ascetic, is considered superior to the learned, and superior to the ritualist. Therefore, oh Arjuna!, be a yogi.

Hierarchy: tapasvin (ascetic, who practices austerity) < jñānin (learned, knower) < karmī (ritual performer) < yogī.

The reason: the ascetic purifies but may not realize; the learned knows but may not integrate; the ritualist acts but may be attached. The yogī combines discipline, knowledge and non-attached action.
