Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 2
सिद्धासनं पद्मकं च भद्रं मुक्तं तथैव च | वज्रं सिंहं गोमुखं च वीरं मत्स्यं तथैव च ||
siddhāsanaṃ padmakaṃ ca bhadraṃ muktaṃ tathaiva ca | vajraṃ siṃhaṃ gomukhaṃ ca vīraṃ matsyaṃ tathaiva ca ||
The catalogue of Gheraṇḍa’s 32 āsanas begins. These are the seated postures fundamental for meditative practice. The list continues in the following verses.
Siddhāsana (posture of the perfected one) and padmāsana (lotus) are considered the most important. Bhadra (auspicious), mukta (liberated), vajra (thunderbolt/diamond), siṃha (lion), gomukha (cow’s face), vīra (hero), and matsya (fish) complete the first nine.
Each name encodes a spiritual quality or a bodily form. Āsanas are not mere positions but sādhanas — tools of realization.
