Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 52

वृक्षासनमथो वक्ष्ये योगिनां सुखसाधकम् | एकपादं तु जानूर्वोरन्तरे कृत्वा तु पार्श्वतः ||

vṛkṣāsanam atho vakṣye yogināṃ sukhasādhanam | ekapādaṃ tu jānūrvor antare kṛtvā tu pārśvataḥ ||

Vṛkṣāsana — the tree posture. The tree is the symbol par excellence of stability, growth, and connection between heaven and earth. Its deep roots, its elevated branches.

“Facilitator of happiness.” Balance on one leg develops concentration and serenity. It is one of the most accessible and beneficial standing postures.

The description indicates placing the foot in the groin of the opposite thigh — the classic tree position. The hands typically join above the head or at the chest in añjali mudrā.
