Śivasaṃhitā 5.179

The great ocean of milk (dugdha-mahodadhi) in the skull’s cavity is the image of soma accumulated in the sahasrāra: the nectar of immortality (amṛta) that tantric practice seeks to preserve and sublimate. Meditating on this vast luminous whiteness is activating the pineal gland in modern language, or awakening the brahmarandhra in the subtle.

Śiraḥ-kapāla is the skull (śiras = head, kapāla = bowl/skull), vivara is the cavity, dugdha means milk, maha-udadhi the great ocean. The phrase «here end all the teachings of the guru» marks a decisive threshold: technical transmission concludes where direct experience begins.

This verse describes the limit of all spiritual pedagogy. The guru can give techniques, transmit śakti, point the direction; but the realization of the Self-luminous (svayam-prakāśa) cannot be given by another. This recognition—that teaching creates conditions but cannot substitute experience—is the heart of non-dual epistemology: ultimate knowledge is always self-revelation.
