Within the root lotus resides the svayambhūliṅga, Śiva’s self-manifested form that arises without human agency. Its golden radiance is not mere poetic imagery but a description of direct experience: those who penetrate the mūlādhāra through sustained meditation perceive this luminosity as inner reality, gaining access to both visible and invisible dimensions of existence.
The term kula here designates the lineage tradition and also the totality of energies flowing through the cakra system. Suvarṇābha literally means «of golden brilliance» (suvarṇa = gold, ābha = radiance), evoking the luminous quality of concentrated consciousness. Svayambhū (self-existent, svayam = self, bhū = that which exists) indicates this liṅga is not a mental construction but Śiva’s presence that has always been there.
In the kula tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, the svayambhūliṅga of the mūlādhāra is the anchoring point of all tantric practice. Unlike stone liṅgas worshipped externally, this is the primordial symbol of pure consciousness discovered only in interiority. The Śiva-saṃhitā inherits this teaching and integrates it into its map of the subtle body.
