Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 2
न हि ज्ञानम् ऋते मोक्षो भवेत् क्वचन
na hi jñānam ṛte mokṣo bhavet kvacana
Without knowledge, liberation is never attained
Vasiṣṭha establishes from the outset the path that will run through the entire text: there is no ritual shortcut, no devotional substitute, no technique sufficient without understanding. Knowledge here is not erudition or data accumulation — it is the direct vision of the nature of reality. What the Yoga Sūtras call prajñā, the Aṣṭāvakra Gītā calls jñāna, and the Vāsiṣṭha explores with infinite patience through stories, analogies, and dialogues. Liberation is not something attained; it is something recognized when ignorance dissolves.
