The disciple refuses the two principal identities that sustain the sense of personhood: ownership of the body (deha) and agency in action (kartṛtva and bhoktṛtva). To say “I am not the doer” is not an invitation to passivity but the dissolution of the claim that experience requires an experiencer separate from experience itself. The ātman is neither the performer nor the enjoyer; it is the luminous field in which doing and enjoying appear and disappear. This verse names the silence that remains when the fiction of personal authorship is withdrawn.
