The witness, the permitter, the sustainer, the enjoyer, the great Lord, the Supreme Self — thus it is said also is this Supreme Spirit in this body.
Six epithets describe the Supreme puruṣa within the individual. Upadraṣṭā — witness — observes without interfering. Anumantā — permitter — allows nature’s operations.
Bhartā — sustainer — supports the body-mind complex. Bhoktā — enjoyer — experiences pleasure and pain. Maheśvaraḥ — great Lord — indicates supreme sovereignty.
Paramātmā — Supreme Self — is the highest designation. This is not the individual jīvātmā but the universal consciousness that animates all bodies.
