Pañcamopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 15
जिह्वया वायुमाकृष्य पूरयेदुदरं शनैः | ततः सृक्कण्यौ संभेद्य रेचयेद्दक्षिणामुखात् ||
jihvayā vāyum ākṛṣya pūrayed udaraṃ śanaiḥ | tataḥ sṛkkaṇyau saṃbhedya recayed dakṣiṇāmukhāt ||
Technique of Śītalī: tongue rolled into a tube, inhaling through the mouth, retention, exhalation through the nose (here specified through the right).
The tongue folded into a tube cools the incoming air more effectively than the Sītkārī position. It is even more cooling.
This prāṇāyāma is ideal for summer, to calm anger, or to counteract excess pitta (fire) in the Ayurvedic constitution.
