Pañcamopadeśaḥ (Prāṇāyāma) · Verse 21

शनैः पूरयते नाडीं शनैरायत्य चाधिकम् | धारयित्वा यथा वेगं मूर्छामाप्नोति योगवित् ||

śanaiḥ pūrayate nāḍīṃ śanair āyatya cādhikam | dhārayitvā yathā vegaṃ mūrcchām āpnoti yogavit ||

Technique of Mūrcchā: soft and deep inhalation, extended retention according to capacity, allowing the state of consciousness to alter.

“According to capacity” (yathā vegam) is crucial. The fainting is not forced; it is allowed to arise naturally when the retention is sufficiently deep.

It is a practice of yogic trance, gateway to non-ordinary states of consciousness. It requires a solid foundation in prāṇāyāma and meditation.
