The citta-śuddhi (purification of consciousness) is not a process of elimination but clarification: when the citta’s impurities settle, perception of the future (anāgata) becomes possible like seeing through water that grows still. What was previously veiled by constant thought-movement becomes transparent. The future is not distinct from the present—it was only hidden beneath mental noise.
Anāgata is «not yet arrived», the future (a = not, āgata = arrived), sphurati flashes, flickers or suddenly shines, citta the mind-consciousness in its totality, śuddhi purity. The criticism of one who «lives for pleasure» (viṣaya-sukha) is not moralistic but pragmatic: those who follow the sensory current lose their direction.
The contrast between the yogi whose perception expands into the future and one who dissolves in sensory present illustrates Patañjali’s Yogasūtra teaching on vritti-nirodha: control of citta’s modifications is not repression but clarification. When consciousness’s mirror is cleaned of distortions, it reflects reality in its temporal wholeness.
