The claim that planets (graha) become favorable to the yogi is not superstition but a coherent vision: one who has harmonized internal forces (prāṇa, mind, body) resonates in harmony with cosmic rhythms. Mitāhāra (moderate eating) emerges as a sine qua non condition of the whole system: without it, even brilliant intelligence is blocked.
Ānukūlya is the favorable condition (anu = with, following, kūla = bank, current), graha the planets (literally «those that apprehend»), naśyanti vanish, upadrava disturbances or disorders, mitāhāra the moderate diet (mita = measure, āhāra = food).
The dietary prescription of mitāhāra is perhaps the most consistent practical instruction in all haṭha yoga literature. The Haṭhayogapradīpikā, Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā and Śiva-saṃhitā all agree that overeating (atibhojana) is the greatest obstacle for the yogi. This insistence reflects the physiological understanding that digestion consumes the prāṇa that would otherwise be available for meditative practice.
