शरीरे स्वगुणान्वितं सूक्ष्मसूक्ष्मतरात्मकम् । चिन्तयेत्तस्य यद्द्रव्यं तत्क्षये क्षयवान्न सः ॥
śarīre svaguṇānvitaṃ sūkṣmasūkṣmatarātmakam | cintayet tasya yad dravyaṃ tatkṣaye kṣayavān na saḥ ||
Contemplate in the body, along with its qualities, what is subtler and subtler. That substance which, when this perishes, does not perish — that is the real.
Fiftieth technique. Contemplation of the indestructible within the body. Śarīre svaguṇānvitam — in the body, with all its qualities. Sūkṣmasūkṣmatarātmakam — subtler and subtler. Layer after layer. From skin to muscle, from muscle to bone, from bone to marrow, from marrow to energy, from energy to consciousness.
Tasya yad dravyam — that substance. Tatkṣaye kṣayavān na saḥ — when that perishes, it does not perish. What remains when all layers of body dissolve? What remains cannot die because it was never born. It is the witness-consciousness.
This technique can be practiced literally: contemplate your body layer by layer, from gross to subtle, asking at each level “am I this?” When you reach something that cannot be removed, you have found the real.
