Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 38

न बन्धो न च मोक्षो वै सद्दर्शी किम् नु भाषसे

na bandho na ca mokṣo vai saddarśī kim nu bhāṣase

There is no bondage nor liberation — what are you saying, seer of truth?

The final paradox of Advaita: if you were never bound, you do not need to be liberated. Liberation presupposes bondage, and bondage presupposes someone bound. When that presupposition is examined, it collapses. There is no “one” bound — only the idea of someone bound. Vasiṣṭha uses the rhetorical question as a scalpel: “what are you talking about?” is not contempt; it is an invitation to look more closely.
