Aṣṭama-prakaraṇam (Dhyāna) · Verse 3
विलयो मनसस्तत्र समाधिः परिकीर्तितः । आत्मनः परमात्मनि लीनतां याति यत्र तु ॥
vilayo manasastatra samādhiḥ parikīrtitaḥ | ātmanaḥ paramātmani līnatāṃ yāti yatra tu ||
This verse describes the culmination of dhyāna, specifically the state of samādhi achieved through the complete absorption of the individual ātman into the Paramātman. The term vilaya – dissolution – signifies the cessation of all mental activity, not as a negative emptying, but as a profound merging, a return to the source of consciousness. The yogī, through sustained practice, transcends the fluctuations of the ordinary mind, allowing the internal currents of prāṇa to settle and the sense of separation to dissolve. This process isn’t merely a state of quietude, but an active lina – merging – wherein the individual self loses its distinct boundaries and becomes indistinguishable from the ultimate reality. This verse echoes the core aim of Rāja Yoga – to realize the underlying unity of all things through direct experience, moving beyond conceptual understanding towards a state of profound, unmediated awareness.
