The ātman is described by three classic attributes: free from conceptual divisions (nirvikalpa), pure (śuddha), and of the nature of existence-awareness-bliss (sat-cit-ānanda). These are not properties added to the self but the very formlessness in which all forms are known. Knowing this, the sage is free from fear and free from desire, because there is no second thing that could threaten or attract.
