Karma Yoga · Verse 25
सक्ताः कर्मण्यविद्वांसो यथाकुर्वन्ति भारत | कुर्याद्विद्वांस्तथासक्तश्चिकीर्षुर्लोकसङ्ग्रहम्
saktāḥ karmaṇy avidvāṃso yathā kurvanti bhārata | kuryād vidvāṃs tathāsaktaś cikīrṣur loka-saṅgraham
As the unenlightened do attached to their actions, so should the enlightened do, oh descendant of Bharata, without attachment, desiring the maintenance of the world.
Paradox of Karma Yoga. The vidvān — sage — imitates in form the avidvān — ignorant — but without sakti (attachment).
Loka-saṅgraha — maintenance of the world — is the motivation of the sage. He does not act from personal need but from social responsibility. The external action is identical; the internal intention, opposite. The sage preserves appearances while having transcended the world.
