Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 55

शलभासनमाख्यातं देहदोषविनाशनम् | तत्प्रकारं प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु त्वं कमलानने ||

śalabhāsanam ākhyātaṃ dehadoṣavināśanam | tatprakāraṃ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇu tvaṃ kamalānane ||

Śalabhāsana — the locust posture. The locust leaps, propelling itself upward from the ground. This posture develops that same capacity for elevation from the base.

“Destroyer of the impurities of the body.” The backward extension strengthens the entire posterior chain of the body and stimulates the abdominal organs.

It is the counterposture par excellence of Paścimottānāsana. While the latter folds forward, this one extends backward. Complete balance requires both movements.
