Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 56
दक्षिणं पादमूले तु वामजङ्घां नियोजयेत् | दक्षिणं पादमग्रं तु वामजङ्घोपरि स्थितम् ||
dakṣiṇaṃ pādāmūle tu vāmajaṅghāṃ niyojayet | dakṣiṇaṃ pādamagraṃ tu vāmajaṅghopari sthitam ||
This description appears displaced in the textual transmission. Classic Śalabhāsana is executed face down: the practitioner supports themselves on the abdomen and lifts the legs and chest from the ground, balancing on the belly.
The posture strengthens the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. It is especially beneficial for those who spend much time seated or have lower back pain.
The locust remains still until it leaps with explosive force. So must the practice be: preparatory stillness followed by controlled elevation.
