Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad · 3.1.9

विज्ञानसारथिर्यस्तु मनःप्रग्रहवान् नरः । सोऽध्वनः पारमाप्नोति तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम्

vijñāna-sārathir yas tu manaḥ-pragrahavān naraḥ | so'dhvanas pāram āpnoti tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam

That person who has the discriminating as charioteer and possesses mind as reins — he reaches the end of the path, that supreme goal of Viṣṇu.

Synthesis of the metaphor: the right instruments lead to the destination.

Vijñāna-sārathiḥ — discriminating as charioteer. The capacity to distinguish the real from the unreal as guide.

Manaḥ-pragrahavān — possessor of mind as reins. The controlled mind, that directs the senses.

Naraḥ — the person, the human being. With all faculties, well employed.

Adhvanas pāram — the end of the path. The end of the spiritual journey, the reached goal.

Viṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam — the supreme goal of Viṣṇu. The highest, the abode of the Infinite.

The reference to Viṣṇu (the all-pervading one) indicates that the goal is not a place but a condition: omnipresence, universality, being all.

The path of yoga requires these tools: discrimination and mental control. With them, the journey has an end; without them, it is endless.
