इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन्मनोऽनुविधीयते | तदस्य हरति प्रज्ञां वायुर्नावमिवाम्भसि
indriyāṇāṃ hi caratāṃ yan mano 'nuvidhīyate | tad asya harati prajñāṃ vāyur nāvam ivāmbhasi
For among the senses that wander, that one which the mind follows, that snatches away his wisdom, like the wind a ship on the water.
The power of the mind to follow senses. Caratām — wandering, active — describes indriyāṇi seeking objects.
When manas (mind) anuvidhīyate — follows, is dragged — by a particular sense, harati — snatches away — the prajñā (wise discrimination). The image of the boat (nāvam) carried by the wind (vāyuḥ) illustrates loss of control when attention and desire unite.
