Tṛtīyopadeśaḥ (Mudrā) · Verse 5
एवं मुद्राः समाख्याताः पञ्चविंशतिसंख्यकाः | तासां मुद्राणां सकलं माहात्म्यं शृणु साम्प्रतम् ||
evaṃ mudrāḥ samākhyātāḥ pañcaviṃśati saṃkhyakāḥ | tāsāṃ mudrāṇāṃ sakalaṃ māhātmyaṃ śṛṇu sāmpratam ||
Summary of the chapter: twenty-five mudrās. Gheraṇḍa has catalogued the complete repertoire; now he will describe each in detail.
The “glory” (māhātmya) of the mudrās is not only their technique but their results. Each seal, correctly practiced, produces specific transformations in the practitioner.
This systematic approach is characteristic of the Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā. First the catalogue, then the detailed description. The student first sees the forest, then examines each tree.
