Prakaraṇa 1 · Verse 44

आत्मज्ञानफलं मुक्तिर् न तत्र कालनिश्चयः

ātmajñānaphalaṃ muktir na tatra kālaniścayaḥ

The fruit of self-knowledge is liberation; there is no certainty of time

When is liberation attained? The question presupposes time, and liberation is not in time. It is like asking when the light turns on: it turns on when it turns on. There is no delay between seeing and having seen. Self-knowledge is not a process — it is an instantaneous recognition. What takes time is the preparation, the purification, the maturing of the ground. The fruit falls when it is ripe, not when ordered.
