Prakaraṇa 4 · Verse 1

राम उवाच — भगवन् कष्ट-संघात-विभिन्ना विबुधा अपि केचिद् आत्मानं मन्यमाना विमूढा भ्रमन्ति

rāma uvāca — bhagavan kaṣṭa-saṃghāta-vibhinnā vibudhā api kecid ātmānaṃ manyamānā vimūḍhā bhramanti

O venerable one, even some beings of elevated wisdom, shattered by the impact of difficulties, lie confused believing that they know the Self.

The text opens with an uncomfortable truth: intelligence affords no immunity against suffering. Accumulated wisdom can evaporate when the weight of existence becomes unbearable.
