Ṣaṣṭha-prakaraṇam (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 1

धारणायाः प्रवक्ष्यामि स्वरूपं गार्गि ते द्रुतम् । एकाग्रतां चित्तस्य स्थिरीकरणमेव च ॥

dhāraṇāyāḥ pravakṣyāmi svarūpaṃ gārgi te drutam | ekāgratāṃ cittasya sthirīkaraṇameva ca ||

This verse directly addresses the foundational practice of dharana, or sustained attention, as elucidated by Gārgī, a student of Yājñavalkya. The core concept presented is ekagrata, the one-pointedness of the mind, a critical prerequisite for achieving deeper meditative states. The verse notes that this ekagrata is not simply a passive state but one actively stabilized – sthirikāram cittasya – implying the need for skillful cultivation and a conscious effort to maintain focus. The phrase “its stabilization” indicates the dynamic nature of dharana; it is not a static achievement but a continuous process of refinement. It echoes the broader yogic emphasis on transforming the restless citta – the mind – through disciplined practice, a key component in the Patanjalian Abhyasa and Vinyasa system, preparing the individual for the subsequent stages of dhyāna and samādhi.
