Ṣaṣṭha-prakaraṇam (Pratyāhāra) · Verse 12

पञ्चभूतानि संयम्य धारणायां नियोजयेत् । ततः सिद्धिर्भवेत्तस्य सर्वज्ञत्वं च जायते ॥

pañcabhūtāni saṃyamya dhāraṇāyāṃ niyojayet | tataḥ siddhirbhavettasya sarvajñatvaṃ ca jāyate ||

This verse lays out a crucial stage in the yogic process, connecting samyama – the disciplined control of prāṇa and mind – with the manifestation of profound spiritual insight. The practitioner, having established control over the five panca-bhuta—earth, water, fire, air, and ether—utilizes this mastery as the foundational support for dhāraṇā, the sustained focus of attention. This isn’t simply a technical exercise, but a deliberate orchestration of subtle energies, allowing for the stabilization of chitta (the mind). The resultant siddhi, or accomplishment, described here, is not a superficial power, but the awakening of sarvajna, omniscience, a state of profound understanding rooted in direct experience. The traditional understanding aligns with the Upaniṣadic emphasis on aligning one’s ātman with the cosmic Brahman through disciplined practice, suggesting that the control of elemental forces prepares the mind for a deeper realization.
