Chapter 1 · Verse 11

निरपेक्षो निर्विकारो निर्भरो निर्ममः शुचिः

nirapekṣo nirvikāro nirbharo nirmamaḥ śuciḥ

Five negations define the Supreme Seer (parama-draṣṭṛ): without expectation (nirapekṣa), without change (nirvikāra), without dependence (nirbhara), without possessiveness (nirmama), and pure (śuci). Each negation removes a category of limitation that the mind habitually projects onto the Self. If the Self is truly without expectation and without change, then the entire apparatus of pleasure (sukha) and pain (duḥkha) — which presupposes wanting things to be other than they are — cannot touch it. The method is consistent: every positive quality of limited existence is denied, leaving only the ineffable remainder of pure awareness.
