The declaration “I am Brahman” appears again in chapter 17 to show that true renunciation is not outward withdrawal but inward recognition. If the Self is formless sat-cid-ānanda, there is nothing that can be left behind and no one to leave. The verse dissolves the scene of renunciation entirely: there is no world standing apart from Brahman, no renouncer separate from it, and no act of renouncing needed. The final renunciation is the renunciation of the one who thought he would renounce.
