Chapter 18 · Verse 40

क्वात्मनो दर्शनं तस्य यद् दृष्टमवलम्बते

kvātmano darśanaṃ tasya yad dṛṣṭamavalambate | dhīrāstaṃ taṃ na paśyanti paśyant

In chapter 18 (Janaka’s liberation), verse 40 deepens the teaching of non-duality. The ātman is pure consciousness that remains immune to all appearance. In Advaita Vedānta philosophy, this verse of the Aṣṭāvakra Gītā reveals that freedom is inherent to the Self and requires no acquisition.
