The Self is without concepts (nirvikalpa), pure (śuddha), of the nature of existence-consciousness-bliss (saccidānanda). Knowing this, the sage is free from all fear, free from all desire. In chapter 20, even the most familiar affirmations take on finality. They are no longer steps on a path but the last articulations of what has already been lived. The Self does not become free; it is known to be ever-free.
