Ātma-Saṃyama Yoga · Verse 44

पूर्वाभ्यासेन तेनैव ह्रियते ह्यवशोऽपि सः | जिज्ञासुरपि योगस्य शब्दब्रह्मातिवर्तते

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hy avaśo 'pi saḥ | jijñāsur api yogasya śabda-brahmātivartate

By that previous practice, one is drawn toward yoga even against their will. One who simply desires to know yoga transcends the Brahman of words (the Veda).

Pūrvābhyāsa (previous practice) has irresistible power. Hriyate — one is drawn, attracted — avaśaḥ api — even against their will. The impressions (vāsanā) are stronger than conscious resistance.

The jijñāsu (inquirer, seeker of knowledge) of yoga surpasses śabda-brahman — Vedic knowledge based on words/scripture. Yoga is direct realization, not indirect knowledge.
