Dvitīyopadeśaḥ (Āsana) · Verse 21

dakṣiṇaṃ pādāmūle tu vāmajaṅghāṃ niyojayet | dakṣiṇaṃ pādamagraṃ tu vāmajaṅghopari sthitam ||
The execution of seated Gomukhāsana: one leg crossed over the other so the knees stack and the feet align at the sides of the opposite hips. Gheraṇḍa’s description emphasizes the position of the calves.
This posture is a deep hip twist. For many Westerners with tight hips, it is more accessible than the lotus but equally powerful for meditation.
The characteristic “cow’s face” refers to the shape the crossed legs create, with the feet as horns and the space between the knees as the mouth. It is a posture of simultaneous containment and opening.
